Copenhagen

Copenhagen is a pulsating metropolitan capital with a heart beating for sport events. Copenhagen has staged several sport events in the very heart of the city such as the UCI Road World Championships 2011, the World Cup Final in Archery and the IOC Session and Olympic Congress. Copenhagen has a harbour clean enough to swim in and provides a historical oasis that is constantly embracing the future – also when it comes to staging sport events.

Copenhagen is a host city with the proven ability to organise successful events in creative and beautiful surroundings.

Copenhagen is one of the most popular conference and event cities in the world due to its easy accessibility, general high level of efficiency and low crime rate.

Awarded the Ultimate Sports City 2012

  • Ranked ‘Second Most Liveable City’ in 2010 by the famous magazine Monocle
  • The greenest major city in Europe in 2010 according to The European Green City Index

Historic

The UCI Road World Championships 2011 and the World Cup Final in Archery 2009 made history when they were staged in the centre of Copenhagen. Medieval townhouses in a variety of colours and atmospheric streetlamps reflecting in the cobble stones formed an epic frame of the events in the old city centre. The triathlon KMD Challenge is the only ironman-distance staged within a capital, and since 2010 the event has become popular and with increasing numbers of participants. The event has been extended with a recreational short distance 18:4:18. Copenhagen Marathon is historic too. Since 1981 the marathon has been a must attend for many Danes and the IAAF/AL-Bank World Half Marathon 2014 will share parts of the course with the one of Copenhagen Marathon.

Green

Ecology, environment and sustainability are of great concern to Copenhagen citizens, retailers and politicians. Copenhagen is known as one of the most environmentally friendly cities in the world. In fact, Copenhagen was recently ranked the greenest major city in Europe according to The European Green City Index. The ICF Canoe Marathon World Cup 2012 and the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships 2013 are being staged with a special focus on sustainability. Based on the experience from the World Cup, the World Championships in 2013 will comprise even more environmental issues. Further the event is expected to be planned and conducted according to the international standard ISO 20121 on event sustainability management.

Blue

Water is one of the distinguishing features of Copenhagen; whether it is the sea that surrounds it, the canals that wind their way through its heart or the many lakes, ponds and fountains to be found in its parks and nature reserves. The water in Copenhagen’s harbour is so clean that open water swimming and triathlon swimming are staged here.
